The Ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in the moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayers for the Dead - Hramoty Our Eastern Christian faith takes death frankly and openly into account. Our Church calendar provides many occasions when we are asked to face up to the fact of death. Easter is one such occasion. Sunday is another. Every Sunday is a 'little Easter" on our Church calendar celebrating Christ's victory over death. On our Church calendar every year there are special Memorial Saturdays or "Saturdays for the Souls" which provide another opportunity for us to face up to death. On these Saturdays the Divine Liturgy is celebrated and special prayers are offered for our deceased loved ones. We pray for the dead especially on Saturdays since it was on the Sabbath day Christ lay dead in the tomb, "resting from His works." Thus, in the New Testament, Saturday becomes the proper day for remembering the dead and offering prayers for them. According to our Byzantine liturgical calendar for 2008, the All Souls Liturgies and commemorations, at 9:00 am, fall on these following dates: January 26 th, February 16 th, February 23 rd, March 1 st, and May 10 th, 2008. You may list the names of your beloved deceased on the card, include it in the "All Souls" envelope (provided in your box of Church envelopes) and return the same in our Offertory basket. And, be sure to attend the Divine Liturgies on the All Souls Days. A reminder for your precious help! Your faithful Offerings which you place in St. Michael's weekly Offertory are a blessing to our Parish! In order to properly record your sacrificial gifts, please be sure to check or indicate the number amount which you include in your envelope. When you wake up in the morning say: Lord, What can I do for you Today! Called to Eternal Life The Rites of Christian Burial were celebrated this past week in our Cathedral Church for + Anna Onufer (Little Egg Harbor, NJ) and for + Donna Sopoliga Poloni, the sister of Fr. Vicnaja J'im Panjat! Our Parish ECF Program Parents: The Children of St. Michael's deserve the One Hour of religious education at our Chapel facility each and every Sunday morning!
