We are, by nature, rational creatures. God has given us the ability to think, to evaluate, to consider the evidence, and to come to a logical conclusion. In this sense, Thomas' doubt in today's Gospel were the normal consequences of the way God had made him in the first place. When the other Apostles told Thomas they had seen the Risen Lord, he questioned their reliability. He considered the source of the evidence and found it wanting. After all, one of the Apostles had betrayed Jesus. Peter, their fearless leader, had denied Jesus. The rest had scattered when Jesus was sentenced to death. Only John was at the foot of the Cross when Jesus died. They were telling him Jesus was alive. How could he trust anything they told him? Moreover, from a purely logical standpoint, death had pronounced the final word on the great adventure with jesus: Failure.

Logically, it was all over. It no longer seemed reasonable to trust anything Jesus had said or done. But the point of today's Gospel event and lesson is not to condemn the healthy skepticism that is built into our very nature, but to teach us that in order to discover the truth about our life's meaning and purpose, we must venture beyond the limits of finite intellect. If we rely exclusively on our power of reasoning, the search for answers to our life-and-death questions will inevitably fail/ Faith demands more than an intellectual commitment. Faith demands a commitment to a person!

New Life

Some years ago there was a German countess who prided herself on being an infidel, a nonbeliever. To prove her point, she decreed that when she died, concrete should be put over her grave so that nothing might open it. Then it was to be inscribed on top of the concrete that no one was to open the grave, thus proving that death was final. But to the amazement of all, an unknown small acorn found its way under the concrete. Today the concrete lies in shambles, broken apart by a huge oak tree, as if to say that no lie that anyone can ever concoct will be able to have the final say that there is no life after death.

Very, Very Special Thanks!
