It is never a question with any of us of faith or no faith; the question always is "In what or in whom do I put my faith." 'Lord, may our prayers ascend as incense in your sight. As this building is filled with fragrance, so may your church fill the whole world with the fragrance of Christ.' Many people do not recognize Christ because they do not recognize themselves as sinners, If I am not a sinner, I have no need of Christ. I won't celebrate the mystery of Christ in joy if I don't realize in sorrow that I am a sinner who needs a savior. The focus, however, is not on sin, but on Christ who saves. In today's Gospel,... Jesus teaches the brothers james and John a powerful lesson in leadership in today's gospel. It's not a rare thing to find the disciples misunderstanding Jesus. In fact, they seem to misunderstood his message so many times during the time they were together. But Jesus, patient teacher that he was, was always on the lookout for occasions to gently steer their misconceptions of him towards the correct path. The world understands power as ambition, arrogance, making it the top even if this means building one's dreams on the ruins of others' lives. It understands glory as pride and complete independence from God and others. This wasn't the way of Christ. For Jesus, the way of power could only be through service, and glory only through suffering and the cross. True greatness in Jesus' mind is the most radical form of greatness there can be summoned up in the idea of 'self-emptying.' Take Away the Stone! This coming Saturday, March 15 th, is the Saturday in Memory of Lazarus. The Troparion on that day explicitly stats: "Christ our God before Your passion You confirmed our common resurrection when You raised Lazarus from the dead." But, before Jesus could bring His friend Lazarus back t life, He needed help from others to clear away the stone that blocked the entrance to the tomb. Once the stone was gone, He could work miracles. We too need to clear away whatever there is in our attitudes and intentions that makes it hard for others to receive the love we wish to offer them. And we cannot do it by ourselves; we need the help of our loving God. This week, we ask the Spirit to assist us to see clearly what we need to change in ourselves and our culture if healing is to come through is.
