Remembering Who We Are and How to Remind Our Neighbors
In commemoration of the Feast of the Annunciation, St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 1900 Brooks Boulevard, Hillsborough, NJ will host a Respect Life Celebration on Sunday, March 21 beginning at 3:00 pm. This event, sponsored by the Respect Life Office of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic, will be an afternoon of prayer, reflection and fellowship. Everyone is invited to share in the beautiful celebration of two short Byzantine Catholic prayer services and to hear a presentation by Theresa Notare, PhD and Loretta Fleming, MA.
The Feast of the Annunciation (March 25) is a feast day with special theological significance for the pro-life cause, since it celebrates the moment when God the Son assumed human nature in Mary's womb. We find the biblical account of the Annunciation in the Gospel of St. Luke, Chapter 1. Here we recall the announcement from the Archangel Gabriel of the good news to Mary that she has been chosen to be the Mother of the Lord, and Mary's affirming response to the will of God. "Let it be done to me according to Your word."
Please note: If you plan to attend please place your names (s) on the sign up sheet in the vestibule. We will inform Fr. Cimbaia of the number of participants from our parish.

Does God Love us because we are special - or are we special because God loves us?
God of Life,
there are days
when the burdens we carry
chafe our shoulders
and wear us down,
When the road
seems dreary and endless,
the skies grey and threatening:
when our lives have no music in them
and our hearts are lonely,
and our souls have lost their courage.
Flood the path in light,
we beseech The, Lord,
Turn our eyes to where
the heavens are full of promise.
- Saint Augustine

God has a work to do with us that will not be done without us.
- St. Augustine
[Some people brought a paralytic to Jesus to be healed.] Seeing how much faith they had, Jesus said to the paralyzed ma, "My son, your sins are forgiven." [At once the man was healed.] - Mark 2:5
Harold Hughes described himself as "a drunk, a liar, and a cheat." He was so convinced he'd never change that he decided to end it all.
At the last moment, however he remembered from the Bible to realize that to take one's life is wrong.
So he knelt down sobbing and explained to God why he was going to end it all.
Suddenly, something happened that he never experienced before in his life.
He wrote later:
"God was reaching down and touching me. Like a stricken child lost in a storm, I suddenly stumbled into the warm hands of my Father. Joy filled me, so intense it seemed to burst my breast."
Ten years later, Harold Hughes was was elected governor of Iowa.
When did I, perhaps, feel God "Touching me"? February 21, 2010
| Again we keep this solemn fast, A gift of faith from ages past, |
This Lent which binds us lovingly To faith and hope and charity |
From the Writings of St. John Chrysostom: Fasting is a medicine, making the sick healthy and keeping the healthy from getting sick. Let us not be sad in our self-denial, for the change in our way of life during these blessed days leads us to joyful holiness." Isn't that a positive and imaginative way to think about fasting? What day-by-day discipline will be part of all your lenten meals? By the time Easter arrives, if we keep lenten fast with a positive attitude and with lots of imagination, our minds and bodies will be far healthier (and hungrier) than they are now.
ByzanTEEN Youth Rally A flyer insert in today's Bulletin especially for the Teenagers of our Parish. Please check out the website. Registration forms available in the vestibules...

Tomorrow, February 15 th, marks the beginning of the Great Fast, Lent, for Catholics of the Byzantine Rite.
Tomorrow, strict fast and abstinence is required. Meat and dairy products are not permitted.
Let us begin the season of Fast with joy, giving ourselves to spiritual deeds, cleansing our soul and body by controlling our passions as we limit our food and live on the virtues of the Spirit. Let us persevere in our longing for Him that we be worthy to behold the most solemn Passion of Christ and the most holy Passover, rejoicing the while with spiritual happiness.

Insert from this week's bulletin The Time of Fasting is at our Doorstep For Byzantine Catholics, the Lenten season/The Great Fast begins on Monday, February 15 th. That day, according to our liturgical practice, is a day of strict fast and abstinence, a day on which meat and dairy products are not permitted. Pope Benedict XVI released his message to Catholics for Lent and it has a strong focus on fasting, which along with prayer and almsgiving is one of the three penitential practices that are associated with Lent.mAs our Holy Father stated:: "Fasting satisfies your deepest hunger...the hunger and thirst for God". Additionally, for Byzantine Catholics, Wednesdays and Fridays of the Great Fast are days of simple abstinence (meatless) or equivalent practice.

Are You Sleeping Spiritually? A priest was baptizing a six week old baby. During the ceremony the baby was peacefully sleeping in his mother's arms. When the priest was about to pour the water on his head, the baby suddenly awoke with a soft whimper. After the ceremony the priest mentioned to the mother that he was surprised the baby awoke so abruptly just at that moment. "Oh," she replied, "I squeezed his toes to wake him. I didn't want him sleeping through his baptism." Her comment was a reminder that we should always be alert to our baptismal promises. This sacrament of initiation is the first step on our earthly spiritual journey. It is not a "once upon a time" event, but a daily way of life. If we ignore our faith, allow evil to lead us and fail to pursue a life of Christian virtue, then we are sleeping through our baptism. Jesus, when I spiritually doze, pinch my toes and wake me up! Also: the Baptism of Our Lord by John is a reminder for us to remember the name and to pray for the priest who baptized us.
All you who have been baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ. Alleluia!
An Early reminder: In celebration of Church Unity Octave Week an Ecumenical Service will be held in our Cathedral Church on January 24 at 3:00 pm. Bishop William will be present and will be the homilist for this afternoon Service.
All Souls Saturdays The first All Souls Saturday is February 6 th. By our communal prayer and Liturgy we remember those who have been called to their eternal reward. Please be sure to list the names of your deceased loved ones on the All Souls card provided in your Offertory envelop box and submit them at this time.
The Precious Hearts and Hands of our Kitchen Workers. Our Pirohi Makers and Baking Workers are a special blessing to St. Michael's! How can we ever thank these dedicated souls who labor in love for Our Lord and His Church. From early mornings 'till late at night they exert themselves in these two endeavors of our parish life. The Lord abundantly bless these precious, dedicated God-loving souls of St. Michael's!!!
House Blessing? Either of the Fathers of our Parish will be happy to visit and bless your home. Please drop a note to us listing your name, telephone number and the best time and day of week that would be convenient for this visit. Your note may be placed in the Offertory basket.
January 3, 2010 The Year of Our Lord, 2010
Loving Lord, we than You for the gift of a New Year. As the days pass, may we open our hearts and minds to the treasure that is Your presence among us! Fill us with Your peace; let Your light shine in and on us!
Lord, we thank You for the life which You have bestowed upon us, as sons and daughters of St. Michael's Cathedral Parish. As we begin the joyful celebration of our 120 th Anniversary, may Your continued blessing be upon our Parish Family!
Called to Eternal Life. Amid the countless voices that call on us in this world, the One voice that discreetly resonates in the Gospel, the voice of Jesus Christ is the voice of tenderness, compassion and mercy: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest." (Matt. 11:28)/ The Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated this past week for our dear Julie Medvecky. To her dear Family our Parish Family offers Condolences, knowing that Our Lord will give her rest and the blessing of an eternal reward. Julie is now in the safe keeping of Our Lord's hands.
An Upcoming Event. As part of our 120 th anniversary celebration of the founding of our Parish, we are planning a "tricky tray" event on April 18, 2010. You may have received a gift you will never use or one that you have forgotten about and is lying on a shelf or in a closet. What a better way to put such a gift to good use then by donating it as a prize to our "tricky tray" event. No gift is too large or too small! And every gift will be greatly appreciated! Donated gifts may be brought to the Cathedral or Chapel.
